Description:
According to the Sitejet Help Center and forum discussions, the issue with canonical tags not being absolute/self-referencing has persisted since 2021. This continues to cause major SEO and indexing issues for agency-managed client sites.
Problem / Impact:
-
Google sees 301 redirects on canonical URLs because they are not absolute/self-referencing.
-
sitemap.xml contains relative URLs or placeholders, causing additional indexing problems.
-
Client subpages are not properly indexed, leading to SEO errors (“Canonical URL is redirected”, “Not self-referencing canonical URL”).
-
Agencies managing multiple client websites face a critical workflow blocker – there is currently no fully reliable workaround.
Requested Solution:
-
Allow agencies to manually set absolute, self-referencing canonical URLs per page, or at least provide an option in the SEO settings to define the site’s full URL (e.g., https://yourwebsite.com) from which Sitejet automatically derives canonical URLs for all pages.
-
Ensure sitemap.xml uses these final URLs correctly.
-
Optional: bulk-setting for multiple pages/sites to reduce workload.
Benefit for Sitejet:
-
Resolving this long-standing issue would remove a major blocker for agencies.
-
A permanent solution would improve Sitejet’s reputation and popularity among agencies and professional users.
-
Clear SEO reliability for clients would make Sitejet more competitive with other CMS platforms.
Urgency / Priority:
High – this directly impacts client visibility on Google and SEO performance. A reliable solution is urgently needed.
Additional Notes:
-
Current automation or JS workarounds are insufficient for active agencies.
-
Implementing this feature would solve a multi-year issue and strengthen Sitejet’s position as an agency-friendly CMS.
