Canonical URL is empty

The canonical link tag on my main Web page looks like this: . It should be , however. Shouldn’t it? Or, is this SEO compliant? I followed other discussion here as well, but I have also no access to support since I’m running sitejet via the Plesk of my provider.

Hey there,

I might have to check your website to see if there is any issue from the Website Builder side. You can actually also contact us regarding issues with the Website Builder via our support mal / contact form.

But (!) your provider should either be the first support or should grant you support from Plesk directly!

We found a “solution” to this issue. Well, it is rather a temporary workaround. This issue refers to a one-pager site.

A canonical link is not usually necessary for a one-pager.

The main purpose of the canonical tag is to avoid duplicate content and to tell search engines which version of a page should be favoured if there are several similar or identical pages. With a one-pager, there are naturally no duplicates or very similar pages within the website, as the entire content is presented on a single page.

Google recommends using canonical tags only when pages are largely the same or identical.

However, there is one exception to note: If your one-pager is accessible via different URLs (e.g. with and without ‘www’ or with different parameters), a self-referencing canonical could be useful. In this case, the canonical tag would refer to the preferred version of the URL.

However, with Plesk we are working on a solution so that the canonical link is transported to the published website.

As a workaround, you are able to change the link manually for now in the HTML.
